The Art of Soviet Cooking

I loved this.  It's a memoir by the woman who wrote Please to the Table about her family's history in the Soviet Union.  It's a gentle introduction to Soviet history if you're pretty much clueless about it, although largely (but not entirely) from a negative perspective.  It would be interesting to read a memoir by someone who has largely positive memories of the Soviet Union.

Food isn't a major part of the book although it's always there.  There are a few recipes in the back.

Highly recommended.
