Recipe a Day: Chocolate Cake with Yogurt

It's a birthday here today.  Specifically, it's the birthday of our least adventurous eater, so I made fairly boring to me food.  Here's the cake he requested:

1/3 cup butter, softened
1  cups sugar
3/4 cup cocoa
1 cup hot water
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour- whole wheat is very good
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup yogurt

Preheat the oven to 175 degrees (350 F).  Cream the butter and sugar.

And combine the hot water and cocoa in a separate container.

And stir till it's smooth.

Add to the butter and sugar and stir well.

Then add the eggs and vanilla.

And stir till it's lovely.  Make sure those eggs disappear.

Combine the flour and baking soda .

And add some of the flour to the chocolate mix-

Alternating with the yogurt and stirring in between additions.
Keeping adding everything till they're all mixed in.  If you think it's silly to alternate, by all means, just dump it all in and stir.

Pour the batter into a greased 9x13 (approximately).

Smooth and bake for about 30 minutes.

Till it's soft and springy.  We liked naked cakes here, so we usually just eat it like this.  Sometimes we top it with a chocolate bar and spread it thin when it melts, or you can do whatever frosting you like.  This isn't a super sweet cake, although it's fairly chocolately.

  1. Nutella is always good frosting.

  2. Good point. They also do a chocolate peanut butter mix here that I like better then nutella. I hadn't thought of using that for frosting. Yum.
