There are houses for sale everywhere in Tokmok. I didn’t clue in at first that I was seeing them, since the sale notices are often abbreviated (I’d been taking pictures of them before I’d realized what they were, since they’re so common). I quizzed the students at the university about selling a home here. Not surprisingly, it’s very difficult to sell a home here and it can take years to sell one. Home prices have gone up significantly in the last few years; one student told me his family had purchased a home for $5000 four years ago and that the same home would be worth at least $15,000 today. Not that it would be easy to sell. They estimated a regular home in Tokmok would be worth $15,000-$20,000 and that nicer homes would be $30,000 all the way up to $80,000 for something very expensive. I’ll have to get some photos of the really nice, two-story homes that are around. One is under construction a few doors down.
Most homes have the sale notice written on the gate, like the gas and electric meter numbers.
If you live in a culdesac, you can post your notice on the main street. The home with the green gate goes with the sign posted for 30 Soviet Street. As always, these photos look better if you click on them.
