"I Have a Little Sailboat"

Does anyone remember "I Have a Little Sailboat? I've looked online to find out where this song came from (or just if I'm singing it right) and I can't find anything about this one. I've found others that I remember from when I was little, but not this one.

  1. I remember some lines of it (if it's the same one):
I have a little sailboat [and I'm going to sea?]
    [don't remember the next line]
And when I find that island, all shiny and new,
I'll turn around my sailboat and I'll come back to you.

Does this sound like the one you mean? If so, and if you can fill in the missing pieces, I'd appreciate it.

  2. Here are the words I know:

I have a little sailboat and I'm going to sea
To sail with all the seagulls till there's no one there but me
I'll sail into the sun till I run out of blue
And then I'll turn my sailboat and I'll come home to you.

I'm going to be a sailor the whole world I'll explore
Somewhere there is an island that was never found before
And when I find my island all shiny and new
I'll dream upon my pillow till I come home to you.

  3. I remember this well. It was on a demo LP of Lullabies that my dad brought home. I have been looking all over for this but to no avail. All I remember was it had a woman in a rocking chair holding a baby on the cover.

  4. I had the same record with the woman and baby on the cover. Here's the way I sing it, altho' I know I am missing a verse...

I have a little sailboat and I'm going to sea,
To find my special island where there's no one there but me,
And when I find my island (all shiny and new?)
Then I'll turn about my sailboat
and I'll sail home to you.

Previous post would indicate that I am conflating two verses. I remember one had "blue" in it.

I love this song, because it expresses our all-too frequent desires to escape and run away from everything, but at the same time expresses the love we really feel for home and family.

  5. My mom used to sing that to me when I was little.
She sings it to my brothers at night now, and I remember the song:

I have a little sailboat and I'm going to sea.
I'll follow all the seagulls 'till there's no one there but me.
I'll sail into the sun 'till I run out of room.
Then I'll take my sailboat and I'll sail back to you.

I'm going to be a sailor, the whole world I'll explore.
Somewhere there is an island that was never found before.
And when I reach my island so shiny and new,
I'll breathe upon my sailboat and I'll sail back to you.

    Hope that helped! :]

  6. I found this online:

    I have a little sailboat
    And i'm going to sea
    I'll follow all the seagulls
Til there's no one there but me
    I'll sail into the sun
Til i run out of food
    Then i'll turn my sailboat
And i'll come home to you

I'm going to be a sailor
    The world i'll explore
    Somewhere there is an island
    That t'was never found before
And when i find my island
    So shiny and new
    I'm dream about my sailboat
And i'll sail back to you.

    I found it here:

I think when put to melody, some of the words changed (to keep a steady meter).

Also, I remember my dad singing "till I run out of blue" too!

When singing, I think these words make more sense:

    I have a little sailboat
    I'll sail out to sea
    I'll follow all the seagulls
Til there's no one but me
    I'll sail into the sun
Til I run out of blue
    Then I'll turn back
    And come/sail home to you...

    I am a little sailor
    The world I'll explore
I'll search and find an island
    Not found before
And when I find my island
    So shiny and new
    Then I'll turn back
    And sail home to you...

Absolutely my favorite lullaby with the fondest of memories!

  9. It came from a record "Lullabies for Sleepyheads" sung by Dorothy Olsen. Many of you are close on the words.

You can still find copies of the record. She also had another cool kids' record, as well as adult records. She was known as the "singing librarian" for a while.

    Here are the words:

I have a little sailboat and I'm going to sea.
I'll follow all the seagulls, 'til there's no one there but me.
I'll sail into the sun, 'til I run out of blue.
Then I'll turn my sailboat, and I'll come home to you.

I'm going to be a sailor; the whole world I'll explore.
Somewhere there is an island no one's ever found before.
And when I find my island all shiny and new,
I'll bring about that sailboat and I'll sail back to you.

Here's one place you can buy the album, or at least listen to sample tracks:
