Another One about Uzbekistan

Don't miss this one- a variety of opinions about what is going on in Andijan.

Andijan is in the Ferghana Valley not far from Kyrgyzstan.

The UN has also added Uzbekistan to its list of countries of particular concern in their actions regarding religious freedom.

Registan.net is the best place to find updates and links to various news agencies about Central Asia.

And here is a translation of a Russian article about the most recently reported situation.

  1. Thanks for passing the word Amira. Oh, Uzbekistan.

I was perterbed by the Russian expert who says drug lords and islamists are the same thing. doesn't make any sense to me. Look how the Taliban shut down the heroin trade in Afghanistan, for example.

  2. It seems like there are few groups that get lumped together as much as Muslims do. Of course there are Islamist drug lords, but that doesn't mean that Islamists in general are drug traffickers. Islamists aren't even all bad. Hard to believe from reading almost anything in the media about Islam.

It is interesting that the Taliban was willing and able to in large measure stop poppy farming in Afghanistan near the end of their reign. Did you see this article about some farmers in Afghanistan replacing their poppy fields with roses? http://www.asianews.it/view.php?l=en&art=1896

  3. You're so right about the lumping of Muslims.

And I had missed that tidbit on roses in Afghanistan. What cool NGO work, especially since according to the piece, roses were grown for rose oil in Kabul until 1970.
