Things are hopping in SW Kyrgyzstan. Apparently the government has lost control of Jalalabad and probably Osh. Some are reporting that the President of Kyrgyzstan is in Moscow.

Akaev defended the recent election results. But he said through his press office today that the Central Election Commission should look into the matter involving disputed regions.

The statement said officials are to pay particular attention to those districts where election results provoked demonstrators.

Think they'll really look into the results?

I hope so, but I'm not feeling optimistic today--would any corrective measure be taken? I'm always wishing Utopia for the nations of Central Asia, and end up puzzled how they hang on so long, so much better off than Pakistan, but still so frustratingly stalled.

But they've been independent for such a short time. I really have hopes for Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Maybe not right now, but sometime.

Since the President is apparently going out in November anyway, it seems like he could be a little more responsive to the protests, especially if it would stop some violence.
