Akaev defended the recent election results. But he said through his press office today that the Central Election Commission should look into the matter involving disputed regions.

I hope so, but I'm not feeling optimistic today--would any corrective measure be taken? I'm always wishing Utopia for the nations of Central Asia, and end up puzzled how they hang on so long, so much better off than Pakistan, but still so frustratingly stalled.
But they've been independent for such a short time. I really have hopes for Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Maybe not right now, but sometime.
Since the President is apparently going out in November anyway, it seems like he could be a little more responsive to the protests, especially if it would stop some violence.
